The inevitable problem with listening to a Steve Kilbey solo album: it will be nowhere near as great as a Church release. Neither John Lennon nor Paul McCartney could create anything as incredible as a Beatles album, so naturally you wouldn't expect a CD like Dabble to live up to any recent Church albums. Factor that in with the fact that Dabble was recorded in less than one week, and you may understand the nature of this CD better.Dabble relies heavily on repetition. And I mean REALLY heavily. This is almost a minimalist approach. Whereas the Church had a habit of hypnotizing their listeners with guitar noises, Steve Kilbey relies on lots of studio overdubbing to drive his mystique across. And while the effect comes across well, these songs don't stack up to being very memorable. But lucky for the listener, there are lots of good ideas that Steve Kilbey uses as a template, like Seasick, Self Portrait, Keeper, and Blessed One. The trick is for you to sit through it being cycled for so many times. Essential for the die-hards only.
