as someone who has been listening to trespassers william since their first album, i am so disappointed with "having." something that drew me to this band was their incredible attention to melodies. anna-lynne's voice is emotionally raw and beautiful, and breathtaking when taken to its upper register. her lyrics are poignant, sad, and honest. the band's swirls of texture have always been mesmerizing.
the voice, the textures, and the lyrics are all here. what is sorely lacking on this release are the beautiful melodies. every song is full of very short, repetitive phrases sung with the same melody the whole time. the chord structure from one song is virtually indistinguishable from the next. the songs are almost interchangeable. on one hand you could say that makes for a consistent album, but in this case it makes for a boring and tedious one. each song alone could pass for a nice song, but all on one album is a little too much to bear.
were they striving more to expand their dynamic range and use of distortion and rely less on vocal melodies? maybe. but if this is the direction they're going to keep going in, i don't know if i'll be able to keep listening to them. this is a review i hate to give because i love this band, and they have created some of my favorite songs ever written. none of them are on this album, not even close.
