You know the ones: if you lost your entire music collection, which albums would you start with...TDS would be in he top 25. Now I had heard "With Teeth" and "And All That Might Have Been" in 5.1 Dolby Surround, but neither of those compare with this jewel, in my opinion. When you read in other reviews that listeners heard things they had never heard before, this is not BS. I'd listened to the stereo version hundreds of times, but honestly this was like listening to it all for the first time. Layer upon layer of sound, unfolding out of all six speakers. Bliss...true bliss. Some of the highlights for me: The surround effects on "Closer" are spectacular. You can tell that a lot of thought and care went into putting the right sound, at the right speaker, at the right time. It was certainly done by an artist and not an opportunist. And the multiple melody layering in "The Downward Spiral" was very impressive too; There is a melodic separation that is not very distinct on the previous versions. It comes through loud and clear here. The sounds that come and go during "Piggy" are fascinating to me. It's almost like standing on a street corner and listening to everything go by. Finally, the powerful guitar tones that are presented in "Heresy" are incredible, along with raspy screaming chorus, when contrasted against the tight synth lines. If you have a hot 5.1 surround system and like NIN I urge you to give this baby a spin. I'll forwarn you though: You'll expend much effort straightening all the crooked pictures in your house after cranking it up! MY STRONGEST BUY RECOMMENDATION! Now if only "The Fragile" were to receive this treatment...
