The Impossibility of Reason (Audio CD),13 May, 2003
List price $17.98
The impossibility of a good recording. / 1
There's few things in music that annoy me like bland metal bands - most of which fall under the label "Hardcore". They throw down a bunch of simple chords, some run-of-the-mill beats, and convoluted, uninspiring vocals which are usually all delivered with a mind-numbing scream that never changes pitch throughout the entire recording. Chimera have followed this blueprint nearly perfectly for this record.
Nothing works. As great as it is to be comprehend Mark Hunter's vox, it's a gag gift because the lyrics are typical "My life sucks because of you" things. You've heard it before and done better by NIN, because Reznor is actually convincing. Hey Hunter: grow the hell up.
Lead guitarist Rob Arnold rarely does anything worth mentioning. He just stays the course with boring power chords and only cuts loose in two tracks. Which is a damn shame because those two tracks prove his has something to offer but can't because of crappy songwriting.
Drummer Andol Herrick plays your typical double-bass most the time, but manages to break away from the rut at certain periods to show us he's got some talent too, but it's far too little to save this wreck.
The only thing that prevents this from being a complete failure is the final track, "Implements of Destruction." It seems that Hunter is the weakest link, because this instrumental features Arnold showing off his soloing skill instead of mindless power chords, and Herrick throws down some good tempo changes. But for American metal done right, grab 'Ashes Of The Wake' by Lamb Of God and a few Pantera CDs. Leave this one for the hardcore crowd who know next to nothing about metal music, they'll love it. I sure as hell don't.
Song "Forced Life"
Images still in my head of you dead
I wish I could take them away instead
I sit in my room alone and cry over my loss
Will anything ever be the same?
I wish I could imagine you happy
A life of ecstasy that would be good enough to stop the pain that lingers
In my heart I know I would be content
It's your forced life...It's your forced life...doesn't it feel the same to you?
I sit and wonder
While you ponder of pathetic items that bring you happiness
Those things that put a smile to your face
Are the things that kill me inside
I know deep down you have a good heart
But why am I never included in all of this?
I take you in...rise you up, yet my soul stays untouched?
Nothing ever changes in your mind
Nothing ever changes
Stick your hate to me
I'll find a way to break free

Metallic Madness (Daily Aztec)
Ohio metal band Chimaira may cause you to ask a few questions. First, how do you pronounce the name? Is it ch-ee-mar-ee-uh or kim-ir-uh? Next, what exactly is a Chimaira? Matt DeVries, one of the guitarists for the band, answers the pronunciation problem by pronouncing it kim-ir-uh in a recent phone interview, but the meaning of the name is far more interesting.

After near-breakup, Chimaira is off to a brand new beginning (Chicago Tribune)
Mark Hunter seems like a pretty amiable guy over the phone. He likes to talk about his old restaurant jobs and '80s martial-arts movies, and he uses only a tiny bit of sarcasm when he declares everything is "good as gravy." So it's hard to square his personality with the guttural, shrieking voice on Chimaira's latest album and its obsession with black hearts, dead souls, screaming little girls ...

Music DVD Review: Run DMC Live at Montreux (Blogcritics.org)
When Run-DMC's DJ, and founding member, Jam Master Jay was killed in October of 2002 I took a big step back and questioned my self-ascribed status as a rap fan. Sure, his murder wasn?t the first to rock the rap world but it really made me look at what the style had become and if I wasn?t part of the problem. Sure, I was a fan of Tupac, although of his work with Digital Underground more than ...
