Apart from the names, not just an Opeth clone / 3
The name April Ethereal comes from Opeth's My Arms Your Hearse album, and the title Advent comes from a song on Opeth's Morningrise. It is not too difficult to see that this Polish band was greatly inspired by Opeth and they say the reason for picking up their names was to pay tribute to them, although they don't really think they sound like Opeth too much. That is a controversial issue. They definitely do try to showcase an Opethian style, but the outcome is rather different from what Opeth has offered us on their albums. The main resemblance in the two band's music would have to be the use of acoustic passages and both clean and death vocals. That's about it. The death vocals, while good in their own way, sound nothing like Mikael. The clean vocals on the other hand are barely audible. I really can't say I like his clean singing, since he sounds a tad forced and weak.

The production is a major setback of Advent. The instruments were so poorly mixed and recorded that you feel you cannot enjoy the music to the fullest. Also the flow of the music sounds a bit amateurish. Maybe it's because this was their debut album, maybe it's because they were still trying to grow and mature as a band. Either way, most of the instruments play their own parts throughout the entire album with no real interaction going on, and the vocals seem to sing randomly over them. It's not like the guitars, bass and drums have shaped the vocalist's delivery, rather he has written the lyrics and done the growly vocals over the somewhat minimalist compositions.

The album tends to be an atmospheric, gloomy Eastern European release. The first two or three songs have a weird Arabic feel to them. It's not the riffs or the oriental instruments. It's just the feel. When I read some of their interviews I learned that this connection may be coming from two of the members' having lived in Northern Africa for about ten years. Other than that, their music is very keyboard enhanced and features death vocals. There is not much clean singing here, and I think that's an asset, cause I really don't like his regular voice. The vibe of the general album is rather dark and brutal. The poor mix in this aspect adds to the darkness, but the dry recording takes away the soul of the band, making Advent sound a bit dull overall. Still it is good to see a band that is attempting to be experimental and develop musically. While their starting point may have been Opeth, I heard they have gone through several member changes including a female second singer. So the sophomore release of them may be quite a surprise for some of us.

There are no gaps between the tracks and this makes it like a one long track like Edge of Sanity's Crimson or Green Carnation's The Light at the End of the World, though with more minimal songwriting and weaker production. I do not think this is an essential album but I do not write them off yet either. I'll have to wait and see what they come up with next.
Song "Between Heaven & Earth"
I'm still waiting...for a moment, alone with you
Hopeless grows behind heaven's door
Where I belong now...
eyes full of oceans are waiting...
Are you crying?
Lord, blind my eyes to these visions
The distance is not so far anyway
And I can touch your tears from here...
eyes full of oceans still waiting ...
Oh...It's hurting me so
...And the darkness - Embraces my pain
Oh...it's hurting you too
And that mistake...
Frustration...it's growing between two worlds divided
The same old revelation's chapter
Eyes of oceans must wait, save my soul from this passion...
Oh...It's hurting me so
...And the darkness - Embraces my pain
Oh...it's hurting you too
And that mistake...I can't take it with me
"LORD, ALLOW THESE WORDS OF REDEMPTION
AND TASTE THE PAIN'S WINE WITH YOUR OWN SONS
BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN NOTHING AND YOU INSIST ON CALLING THIS LIFE..."
Between...heaven and earth
This cold fever...I've lost tranquillity
Between heavens...he became...
An unbeliever man...still searching for his peaceful path
This equilibrium...eternal afterlife......
Between...heaven and earth
This cold fever...I've lost tranquillity
Between heavens...between...
An edge of promises...inside the garden of all lies
Why you stole my wings?-Why you stole my life...
OH... THE TRUTH, HURTS MORE THAN THE SCORN DIVINE
A CARVED THORN IN MY HEART SMOULDERING FROM INSIDE
FOR WHOM THE ANGELS DIED
SO ENLIGHTEN MY DIMNESS LIFE
UNPLEASANT REALM OF WHIMS
I BECAME A PRISONER OF TIME...
In heaven's darkest hour...ten thousand angels fall
For all eternity I'm condemned inside these walls of agony...
Between...heaven and earth
This cold fever...no tranquillity
Between heavens...between...Love ...
Between heaven and earth-Between heaven and love
Between heaven and earth-I can hear your whispers... ...
I'm still waiting...for a moment alone with you
Hopeless grows behind heaven's door
Where I belong now...eyes full of oceans must wait......

Music Review: The Colour - Between Earth & Sky (Blogcritics.org)
The Colour fit right in with the early '00s wave of ?The? bands, like The Strokes and The White Stripes, drawing on '70s rock to form their sound. They?re one of the best of this wave of bands that I?ve heard, going a bit more epic than the punk or electro leanings of a lot of their contemporaries. I?m a big fan of blues inspired classic rock, and this album delivers twelve really catchy, fun ...

Music Review: Lovedrug - Everything Starts Where It Ends (Blogcritics.org)
I'm getting to the age where rock music trends are starting to elude me. It seems like so much of what's popular now swings wildly from bubblegum, to rap, to punk, to emo with some hardcore metal in between. So when I received Lovedrug's Everything Starts Where It End in the mail, I automatically pigeon-holed it as another band in a long line of Coldplay wannabes. I couldn't have been more ...
