Monk's Mood a Discovery? / 5
This CD is absolutely what any jazz fan can love, but I have a question. Isn't the version of Monk's Mood on this "discovered" material the same one that was in the documentary "Straight, No Chaser?" The documentary was produced years before. So, is this material really discovered?
Song "I’m old fashioned"
I am not such a clever one about the latest fads
I admit I was never one adored by local lads
Not that I ever tried to be a saint
I’m the type that they classify as quaint

I’m old fashioned, I love the moonlight
I love the old fashioned things
The sound of rain upon a window pane
The starry song that April sings
This years fancies are passing fancies
But sighing sighs, holding hands
These my heart understands

I’m old fashioned but I don’t mind it
That’s how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me.

(Orchestral Interlude)

I’m old fashioned but I don’t mind it
That’s how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me.

?I recently did it on a gig and one of the patrons told me, in her words, she was ?messed up.? It affected her. I gave a little intro into where the song is coming from. The band got into it. I finished the tune. Went through a whole bunch of other songs.

The term "West Coast Jazz" isn't one you hear bandied about very often these days. It was applied in the '50s and '60s to California players like Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck and his sweet-sounding alto player Paul Desmond -- artists who may have...

Live in Detroit: Global Jazz Trio at Baker?s Keyboard Lounge (All About Jazz)
Perhaps the post beautiful thing about Live in Detroit: Global Jazz Trio at Baker?s Keyboard Lounge is that the Global Jazz Trio does not sport keyboards, it is a Sonny Rollins-style saxophone trio, circa 1958, except for the pronounced reverb and echo on Mark Hershberger?s saxophones and the Richard Smith?s electric bass rather than the acoustic double bass.
Songs of India (The New York Sun)
Rudyard Kipling told us that East and West would never meet, but then, he never heard Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vijay Iyer, or Sachal Vasandani. From the beginning, American jazz has benefited from the interplay of the two hemispheres. A disproportionate share of early jazz standards allude to Middle and Far Eastern cultures, such as "The Sheik of Araby," "Poor Butterfly," and "Limehouse Blues," as ...
