Classic early seventies Pop from a vastly under-rated band / 5
An excellent collection of tracks from the Birmingham group Blackfoot Sue. Not only does it include their two 1972 chart successes "Standing In The Road" and "Sing Don't Speak", there are selected songs from their two released albums "Nothing To Hide" (1973) and "Strangers" (1975), as well as tracks unavailable anywhere else. With their gimmicky name derived from two American Red Indian tribes ("Sioux" being respelt as "Sue"), their music naturally tends towards powerfully rhythmic, multilayered harmonies, solidly bass/drum driven pop/rock in the early 70s Glam style of British pop such as the Glitter Band, Sweet, Slade and so on, though they never achieved the same kind of recognition as these latter bands. A highly recommended introduction to a gifted and largely unknown band. Postscript: After a long hiatus, Blackfoot Sue have reformed and currently performing and recording once again. Their 1998 release "Red On Blue" is excellent, well-crafted solid rock and includes a reworking of their classic hit "Standing In The Road". Worth checking out!
Song "You Need Love"
(Hicks / Clarke / Nash)
When you love somebody that means a lot
And so you give the best of what you've got
It's a reason for living to have someone
Without a love in your life you can't go on
You need love I need love
When you're tired and worn out she'll run to you
And calm your restlessness and comfort you
You need love I need love
No wonder that I always say
I can't live another day without you
I tell my friends I'm feeling fine
Then they know that I'm not lying about you
All your life you'll know that your trust was right
When you're holding her close to you at night
You need love I need love
