Warren Vache' - Swingtime is Great Music! / 5
I had the opportunity to work with Warren Vache' in New York at a corporate event (his band played and my team hosted a presentation) and I was impressed with his versatility as a trumpeter and bandleader. Although that was a quartet and this is a larger group (billed as the New York City All-Star Band), the quality of the musicianship remains constant. On Swingtime!, Warren plays with the assurance of a veteran from the title track onward. This is swing in the Benny Goodman style, with a mixture of a few bebop licks and the infectious R&B of Louis Jordan thrown-in ("Saturday Night Fish Fry" is a blast). Mr. Vache' also knows how to play a ballad - he can caress a melody with the best of them (note his treatment of "Mr. Bojangles").

The conclusion I've made is that Warren is a complete professional who doesn't make bad records (I have 5 or 6 in my collection). When he was recording for Concord records, he spent a number of years backing Rosemary Clooney on her records, and I find his short, tasteful solos there to be some of the highlights of those recordings.

This recording is swinging, but balanced in the manner of a big band playing for dancers who want to dance fast AND slow. If you like swing music that is not all hot and raucous, Swingtime! is a welcome example of the musicality found in the best big bands for the past 50 years.
Song "Jesus Christ"
Angels from the realms of glory
Stars shone bright above
Royal david's city
Was bathed in the light of love

Jesus christ was born today
Jesus christ was born
Jesus christ was born today
Jesus christ was born

Lo, they did rejoice
Fine and pure of voice
And the wrong shall fail
And the right prevail

Jesus christ was born today
Jesus christ was born
Jesus christ was born today
Jesus christ was born
And we're gonna get born now.
