Rubber Soul (Audio CD),25 October, 1990
List price $18.98
Truly Great / 5
The UK version of "Rubber Soul" is much better than the original US release - the track order is different (and works better, imo) and there are a few more songs (minus "I've Just Seen A Face" which was really from "Help!"). Most every song here is top-notch, especially (my personal favorites) "Drive My Car" and "Norweigan Wood", but its hard to name favorites with so many great songs. Two exceptions are "What Goes On", which is OK but kind of weak (it's a Ringo tune), and "Run For Your Life", which is just too mean-spirited and abusive (it might work better if it was tongue-in-cheek or ironic, but its not; John flatly threatens to kill his girlfriend if she cheats on him - although it definitely makes the point that they're not in holding-hands territory anymore). The Beatles definitely stepped out of the bubble-gum factory with this album and it's one of their best. "Revolver" followed and this is a truly great creative period, showing the beginnings of their stylistic branching out and experimentation, right before they got REALLY psychedelic. If you want to burn a great CD, assemble in the following order: the singles "Day Tripper" & "We Can Work It Out" + RUBBER SOUL + the singles "Paperback Writer" & "Rain" + REVOLVER. Eliminate one second-rate song of choice due to 80-minute CD limit (my picks above) and you're good to go.
Song "Ooh! My Soul"
(Penniman)

Book Review: Here, There And Everywhere: My Life Recording The Music Of The ...
To label this book merely fascinating would not do either its author or the subject matter it covers the justice both so richly deserve. As the EMI Records engineer hand-picked by George Martin himself to record the Beatles during what most will agree was their most important records -- the 1966 to 1968 period between Revolver and The White Album -- Geoff Emerick had a ringside seat for the ...

Pat DiNizio recalls his first encounter with the Beatles as though it were a scene out of the nostalgia-steeped film "A Christmas Story." "As I was brushing my teeth," the front man for the Smithereens, the long-running Jersey rock outfit, reminisced in a phone interview last week.

Retro Redux: A Music Contrarian Warms To The Beatles (Blogcritics.org)
Let me get the following statement out of the way first. Believe me, I completly understand that the Beatles don't need me to validate them, and I realize that they've already carved out their place in musical history without any help from me. I also understand that Paul McCartney has a lot of other things on his mind right now, as does Ringo, the other surviving Beatle. (A term he is ...
