Some excellent choices.... / 4
The Go-Go's once appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in their undies... and event that heralded my crossing into puberty and my subsequent affinity for these five girls! Now here's another Go-Go's Greatest Hits collection; this one for semi-casual fans or old fans looking to replace their Go-Go's vinyl with a little bit of Go-Go's on CD.
The song selections are pretty darned good for a "Best of" compilation. A whopping SEVEN SONGS are included from the band's best-selling debut, "Beauty and the Beat." That's smart marketing, since most fans hold that album in such high estimation. "Every song on the album is great," some might say. Here, we get not only "Our Lips are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," but also fan favorites like "This Town," "Fading Fast," and "Can't Stop the World." Overlooked and ommitted: Jane Weidlin's brilliant "Automatic."
Four songs are included from "Vacation," including the popular title track. "Beatnik Beach" could've been ommitted without a tear from this reviewer, but I'm pleased to see two of my favorite "Vaction" deep tracks included - "Get Up and Go" and "Girl of 100 Lists." VH-1 earns kudos and big bonus points for including on this collection a very rare Go-Go's track, "Speeding," which was previously only available on the "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" soundtrack. (But couldn't they also have somehow included "Rush Hour" from Weidlin's first solo album?)
Five tracks from the band's third album - "Talk Show" - round out this compilation, including the two radio releases "Head Over Heels" and "Turn to You." The former may rank as arguably the band's best overall track - bubbly, upbeat, involuntarily danceable, and fun, just like the band itself.
Return to a time when Charlotte Caffey was a heroin addict, Belinda Carlisle was heavier-yet-somehow-cuter, Gina Shock had to COUNT THE BEAT ALOUD while playing drums, and Weidlin and Caffey were demanding more than their 1/5th of the profits because they "wrote most of the material." Fondly recall the girls' individual affairs with Rob Lowe and their general affinity for nudity, sex, masturbation, and (mostly) harmless party drugs. Ah, the 80s!
Song "Our Lips Are Sealed"
We've got a secret, but our lips are sealed
We've got a secret, but our lips are sealed
Can you hear them they talk about us
Tellin' lies, well that's no surprise
Can you see them, see right through them
They have no shield, no secrets to reveal
It doesn't matter what they say
In the jealous games people play - hey-hey-hey
Our lips are sealed
There's a weapon that we must use
In our defense, silence
When you look at them, look right through them
That's when they disappear, that's when we'll be feared
It doesn't matter what they say
In the jealous games people play - hey-hey-hey
Our lips are sealed
Pay no mind to what they say
'Cause it doesn't matter anyways - hey-hey-hey
Our lips are sealed
We've got a secret, but our lips are sealed
Hush my darling, don't you cry
Silent angels - forget their lies
Can you hear them they talk about us
Tellin' lies, well that's no surprise
Can you see them, see right through them
They have no shield, no secrets to reveal

Artistic integrity? For Girl Authority, that's not the point. (Boston Globe)
Girl Authority's target audience will probably be oblivious to the pop-culture cred lurking alongside tween-karaoke covers of Madonna and the Go-Go's on the local singing group's sophomore album, in stores today . But moms and dads who pony up for "Road Trip" will be happy to learn that Erasure's Vince Clarke tweaked "Let's Get Together," an unreleased song written for ...

One totally godhead celebration to honor Rodney on the Roq (Daily Bulletin)
Hollywood is the place where "it's all happening" on Friday. Legendary radio personality Rodney on the Roq (known for the famous catchphrase above, among others) gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Knitting Factory (7021 Hollywood Blvd.).
Jam camp (phillyburbs.com)
At one time, trading riffs with Paul Stanley of the legendary rock group KISS might have seemed like too much of a pipe dream to Bob Dreher. Last month, it turned into a dream come true.

The Donnas have every right to be bitter ? and the general nonexistence of delectable male groupies is just one item on a laundry list of spoilers.
