No Rush album has more heart. / 5
I am a big Rush fan and have been since "A Farewell to Kings" was the current album. I am a deep lover of music. The emotional impact and the beauty of music is contained in the chords, melodies, and rhythms, NOT in whether the guitars are cranked loud enough for metalheads. Yes, I too love heavy guitars if they are enhancing emotionally moving music. But heavy guitars for the sake of heavy guitars may as well be opera for the sake of opera. The guitars are not too soft on this album, they're just more evenly balanced with the keyboards. Anyway, enough said on that.

Following the major impact that "A Farewell to Kings" had on me, I thought "Hemispheres" was (and still is) a masterpiece. "Permanent Waves" was a brilliant and fresh change that I loved instantly. After one listen I unhesitatingly proclaimed "Moving Pictures" as the greatest album of all time. And when "Signals" came out, it elevated my Rush bliss even beyond that. This is my favorite Rush album, and the reason I am writing this review is to counteract the poor reviews by the "the-guitar's-too-soft" complainers who may never have been moved so deeply by music as to weep at it's beauty.

So having established that's it's all about the songs and not the guitar level, these songs are moving, they have heart. "Subdivisions" is easily one of Rush's best ever songs, and everything after oozes emotion. Check out the choruses of "The Analog Kid" and "The Weapon". Alex's guitar solo on "Digital Man" is his best ever, it's so filled with emotion and brilliance. And "Losing It" is absolutely brilliant.

So if you're new to Rush, don't listen to the skeptics who say that "Signals" was a low point for the band. This is their best. And unlike "Power Windows" which is a great album but a little over-produced and a bit dated sounds-wise, "Signals" is still very earthy with all acoustic drums. And by the way, to correct an error I've seen twice recently, Terry Brown DID produce this album. It was his last for Rush.

At the time of release in 1982, I was in the midst of my Rush fanaticism, and "Signals" was my favorite album back then. Now 24 years later, I am more objective about the band that inspired me so much, and I can look back on all their albums and see the brilliance and the flaws, and this is STILL my favorite Rush album. In my view, this was the last Rush album that doesn't have any weak tracks or clear flaws.

No Rush album has more heart.

Song "Finding My Way"
Yeah, oh yeah!
Ooh, said I,
I'm comin' out to get you.
Ooh, sit down.
I'm comin' out to find you.
Ooh, yeah. Ooh yeah.
Findin' my way!

I've been gone so long
I've lost count of the years.
Well, I sang some sad songs,
oh yes, and cried some bad tears.

Look out! I'm comin'.
Whoa, whoa.
Look out! I'm comin'.
Whoa, yeah.

I'm runnin',
finding my way back home.
Oh yeah!

Yeah, oh yeah!
Ooh, said I,
I'm comin' back to look for you.
Ooh, sit down.
I'm goin' by the back door.
Ooh, yeah. Ooh yeah.
Findin' my way!

You've done me no right,
but you've done me some wrong.
Left me lonely each night
while I sing my sad song.

Look out! I'm comin'.
Whoa, whoa.
Look out! I'm comin'.
Whoa, yeah.

I'm runnin',
findin' my way back home.
I'm comin'.
Ooh, babe, I said I'm runnin'.
Whoa, babe, I said I'm comin'
to get you, mama.
Said I'm runnin'.

Ooh, babe, I said I'm comin'
for you, babe.
I said I'm runnin'.
Ooh yes, babe, I said I'm comin'
to get you, babe. I said I'm comin'.
Ooh, yeah.

I'm findin',
I'm findin' my way back home.
Well, I've had it for now,
livin' on the road.
Ooh, yeah.
Ooh, yeah.

Findin' my way!
