If you're a fan of the pop side of Soul Asylum and are a casual fan (eg. you like Runaway Train only) then you might not have an appreciation for this album. For the true fan of Dave, Dan and the boys this album is a time capsule, encompassing the growth that this band has made. While nowhere near as polished and pleasant as Let Your Dim Light Shine or Candy from a stranger, this album is full of early warnings of the greatness that was about to be the Soul Asylum that many now know. The highlights of the album are "Voodoo Doll" and "Stranger" which is very jazzy and not typically unexpected on a punk album. Bottom line: if you're a Soul Asylum fan then this is a MUST BUY, if you're expecting Hootie & the Blowfish-type pop songs, look elsewhere.
Song "Gullible’s Travels"
Keep a watch out behind you from that which can blind you
And die like a dream in a jar
Forewarned if hindsight is all that makes you right
You're running away but you won't get very far
No it's not my intention to harbor pretensions
Or told you I hadn't a clue
Took fate by the neck and you'll never look back
You've forgotten more than I ever knew
Everything's turning but mostly just turning out wrong
What's lost was once burning and (finally?) the day seems so long
And it's Gullible's Travels and nothing unravels this way
Just another lost journey where everything's turning away
Saving crowds from the roar from the cutting room floor
Played it at night in his dreams
Woke up was cold and his manager had sold him
It's louder than love but don't think I know what it means
Nobody's talking and who tells you when to go home
Guess I wore out my welcome, it's better than being alone
And it's Gullible's Travels and nothing unravels this way
Just another lost journey where everything's turning away
Shot in the dark landed short of the mark
Can't hold a candle to you
Flame's burning brightly and shines in so lightly
But lighting the day alone seems so untrue
Everything's turning but mostly just turning out wrong
What's lost was once burning but (finally?) the day seems so long
And it's Gullible's Travels and nothing unravels this way
Just another lost journey where everything's turning away

Soul Asylum rocks Street Beat in Vail (Vail Daily)
Those lyrics poured out of televisions everywhere for the majority of 1992 and 1993, but the accompanying images were even more arresting: Soul Asylum?s music video for ?Runaway Train? displayed photos of actual missing children and left contact information if anyone knew the whereabouts of the missing.

MUSIC: The Spin (Nashville Scene)
HE SHINS may have found a larger audience, but not necessarily a livelier one, so it was no surprise that married duo and openers VIVA VOCE had to work the crowd a little at the Ryman Friday night.
Easing Wains pain (Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune)
Opening his door Monday morning, Wain McFarlane showed the kind of energy that puts most other musicians to shame -- something he did throughout the '80s as frontman of beloved Twin Cities reggae band Ipso Facto. "I'm still alive and kicking," said the smiling, dreadlocked music vet, who had played the night before to raise health-care money for a guy he didn't even know that well. Saturday, it's ...

Three-day festival kicks off spring music season (Miami Herald)
Craig Finn's song-stories about small-town Americans carry big themes. As played by his comrades in the Hold Steady, they unfold over swelling choruses and epic piano riffs. The live shows by the glorified, glorious Brooklyn-based bar band are famous for their impassioned, epochal feel.
The Big Gigs: March 9-16 (Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune)
POP/ROCK Proof that stoner metal is no trend, Orange County rockers Fu Manchu have been blowing into town for more than a decade and don't seem to be letting up on their fuzz pedals on the new CD "We Must Obey." They're on tour with hilarious extraterrestrial metalheads Valient Thorr and Artemus Pyledriver. (9 p.m. today, Triple Rock Social Club. $12-$14.) (C.R.) After only eight gigs, the Ditty ...
