BNL hits TRL (4.5 stars) / 4
With their clever lyricism, shimmering pop melodies, and a persona that is the epitome of the white everyman, the Barenaked Ladies certainly fit the bill of their native Canada. Of course, their debut album "Gordon" was a massive hit there, selling an incredible 1 million copies (hey, in Canada, that's like selling 10 million) earning them a Juno Award (the Canadian Grammy), and the admiration of the Canadian public. Hey, that's all well and good, and I'm certainly not gonna deny "Gordon" as a seminal alt-rock near-masterpiece, but how would the Ladies transition from USA, Jr. to USA, Sr.? They got their feet wet little by little by marketing "Brian Wilson" and "Shoebox" for late but well-deserved American radio airplay in 1996, wrote a cornucopia of fruitful songs, and conquered the American music scene with "Stunt" in 1998.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with mainstream Top 40 music, as long as it's fresh and smart. Thankfully, BNL was there to answer the call. On "Stunt", they finally made the transition from alt-rock to mainstream rock, working with former Prince engineers to widdle their songcraft to exquisite bliss, yet still retaining their smarts and fabulous musicianship. This is pure pop music at its fun-loving best.

Of course, there is the perennially overplayed "One Week" that opens up the album with a bang, yet for its reputation of being worn-out, I still find myself humming along and even doing the faux rap that Ed Robertson does so hilariously. The genius of "Stunt" is that the songs are so catchy, fast-paced yet not burning like punk-rock, and satirical to a T that you can't help but find yourself being immersed. However, I feel that "One Week"'s success has overshadowed "It's All Been Done", a perfect sendup to the pop of the British Invasion. "Light Up My Room" sees BNL tackle post-grungy ballads, and it fits quite nicely.

The only tracks I see out of place on this album are "I'll be That Girl", "In the Car", and "Told You So". Steven Page and his frequent collaborator Stephen Duffy are so much better songwriters than this. Tie my pantyhose around my neck? BNL has always been silly, but when they're being too open about it, it's awkward and you find yourself flipping to the next track. "Alcohol" isn't too bad, though, a wild and wacky reverse psychology tale about the dangers of alcohol dependency.

Overall, "Stunt" is a fantastic pop album that represented the beginning of the end for the band as their lives transition from manhood to fatherhood. Newcomers to BNL, don't hesitate to buy this album. With the exception of the three tracks mentioned above, every song is a winner, and you'll find yourself wondering why it took you seven years to find this jewel.

FINAL SCORE-9/10

Song "Sell Sell Sell"
The credits roll, the camera pans
And in the mist our hero stands
He starts to speak, then folds his hands in prayer
An awkward pause, then what's my line?
There's nothing left to say this time
And what would you say to a bad guy who's not there?
In terms of Roman numberals,
He's IV league with Roman Polanski
He'd win an Oscar every time if he was only given the chance

He started on the Broadway stage
A product of another age,
An offer and a pilot drew him west
The series bombed, commercials came
And though nobody knew his name
They all recognized the potential he possessed
Deodorants and dental floss
And how much does that new car cost
His acting was methodical in You Don't Need A Medical
He's branded like a racing car,
He's like a movie star with movies
The week of Independence Day,
The casting agent called to say
Your smile could save our movie and the world

Buy buy buy buy
Sell sell sell
How well you learn
To not discern
Who's foe and who is friend
We'll own them all in the end

It goes like this, we have no choice; the minarets,
The wailing voice
And vaguely Celtic music fills the air
We choose a foreigner to hate,
The new Iraq gets more irate
We really know nothing about them, and no one cares
Aladdin and the forty thieves
Enhanced by brand new special effects
Saddam and his cow disease spiced up
With some gratuitous sex
A movie's made, a war is won
A low-speed chase, a smoking gun
Distracts us while the actor takes the stand

Buy buy buy buy
Sell sell sell
How well you learn
To not discern
Who's foe and who is friend
We'll own them all in the end
