The Hits Just Kept On Coming / 4
After the absolutely stunning and brilliant "Tumbleweed Connection," it had to be difficult to put together an album that could come close to matching it. However, "Madman.." holds up very well.
1. Tiny Dancer-5/5. This is one of his most beloved songs, although it wasn't that big of a chart single at the time. Wonderful lyrics with a chorus that makes your soul swell. Excellent track.
2. Levon-5/5. This was the other single off of this album. Excellent song with some of Taupin's best lyrics. Very soulful storyteller type song.
3. Razor Face-4/5. This is a great song musically, but the lyrics are a bit of a disappointment. It takes a little while, but this song eventually grows on you.
4. Madman Across the Water-5/5. Contrary to what the Amazon reviewer above stated, this DID NOT appear on the "Tumbleweed Connection" album originally. A demo of this song was included on the remastered CD version. This is one of his best songs. The lyrics are superb and the music rocks.
5. Indian Sunset-5/5. This is another of his epic storyteller songs, similar to "Burn Down the Mission" or "The King Must Die." This song is not as good as either of those, but it is nonetheless a stunning musical experience.
6. Holiday Inn-4/5. This is where the album begins to falter. This is my least favorite song on here. The lyrics aren't particularly great, but the chorus is very catchy. This one has a bit of a country feel to it.
7. Rotten Peaches-4/5. This one is similar to both "Holiday Inn" and "Razor Face." Not a standout, but not bad either. Not so good lyrics with cool music.
8. All the Nasties-4/5. This is a truly bizarre song. The lyrics are a bit odd. The music is strange, complete with a full blown choir and some odd chanting. It's just odd. However, parts of it will grow on you.
9. Goodbye-4/5. Short, slow song with just piano and vocals. Just a coda to close the album out. Nothing special.
"Madman..." is a good album with some standout songs that are among his best. There is nothing on here that is absolutely bad. Highly recommended for fans of his early work.
Song "Slow Down Georgie"
Hey there Georgie got a couple of things to say
One you're my friend, and two it's hurting me
Seeing you act this way
But my hands are tied and I can only try to talk you out of a fall
`Cause the reputation of the woman you're dating's
About as nasty as the Berlin wall
Slow down Georgie she's poison
Man you've got to watch yourself
She's gonna get in your head, she's gonna crawl in your bed
You're just a stepping stone for someone else
Slow down Georgie she's poison
She's just another divorcee
An undercover lover of a hundred
Other little fish in the sea
You better cut her loose before she gets her hooks in you
If you give her the world, and it was covered in pearls
She'd only ask for the moon
She's got you hypnotised, with her big brown eyes
And a body that could stop a clock
But if you think your face ain't gonna be replaced
Georgie boy you're in for a shock
Well it ain't my job to rain on your parade
But if the chips were down, you'd do the same for me
It's always been that way
She's got you paralysed with a pack of lies
About honour and the single girl
And if you buy that line you must be out of your mind
You must be living in another world
