I first got into Sepultura when a friend lent me "Chaos A.D." It was pretty good, but my estimation was that the band wasn't in the same league as Metallica, Testament, etc. One day, Amazon recommended "Arise", and I figured, "Why not buy it? It can't be bad."

To use a cliched phrase: it blew me away. The band brings an energy to "Arise" that was lacking in "Chaos A.D.", and it's that energy that elevates this album to the level of metal masterpiece. All four members kick some serious ass on this album - Max Cavalera's voice is at its best here, and damn, can he play a guitar. Lead guitarist Andreas Kisser flawlessly executes solo after jaw-dropping solo. Bassist Paulo Jr. gallops along, easily keeping pace with both guitarists. And drummer Igor, Max's brother, tears it up like his American thrash comtemporaries only wish they could.

And it's not just the band, the songs themselves are awesome. Standouts for me include the title track, "Dead Embryonic Cells", "Desperate Cry", and "Subtraction". But each person has their own favorites, mostly because every single track is awesome. There is truly no filler here. The bonus tracks also rule, especially their cover of Motorhead's "Orgasmatron".

To sum it all up, I guarantee that if you love thrash metal, you will love this album. If you haven't heard of the band, or if you're staying away because you've only heard their modern material and want to see what they sounded like before the change in vocalists, then start right here. And take it from me, you WILL be headbanging to this album years after you bought it. It's just that good.

Song "Primitive Future"
I follow the steps I see in fromt of me
They are deep and well-defined
They show an undefined but straight path
What has gone through me will never return
Future won't let me look back
I just walk, I don't evolve, I just walk
Animals run by my side
They try to communicate, each one in its own way
But I can't understand
I feel alone on this irrational planet
To create or just observe
I keep walking on this desert made of ideas
Primitive future
My head is heave but empty
Everything around me is void, without movement
Without perspectives
The night invades the sky
That darkens the dry ground
Making my shadow join the big stain that's forming
My steps become slow and agonize
I step on skulls of generations that have not formed
I hear painful cries of wars that are to come
To create everything again, from the beginning
To teach new minds
To awake a sleeping giant buried
On the ashes of disgrace
It's scornful the way I live
I look well, I think I'm well
That's all...
Repeat first
Primitive future
